1. Choose a Website and Find the Data Privacy Policy Snapchat
2. What kinds of data are being collected? How many different kinds of data?
Usage information, content information, device information (ie hardware), contact book, camera and photos, location information, information collected by cookies and "other technologies" meaning "web beacons, web storage, and unique advertising identifiers" and information when the user interacts with services offered through partners. In the policy there are numerous links to privacy policies about the privacy policy. (ie, Cookie Policy) They also collect log information, third party information.
3. What service or feature is enabled by the data they are collecting? Why are they collecting it in the first place?
According to the website, Snapchat uses this information to "develop, operate, improve, deliver, maintain, and protect our products and services, send you communications, including by email. For example, we may use email to respond to support inquiries or to share information about our products, services, and promotional offers that we think may interest you, monitor and analyze trends and usage.personalize our services by, among other things, suggesting friends or profile information, or customizing the content we show you, including ads, contextualize your experience by, among other things, tagging your Memories content using your precise location information (if, of course, you’ve given us permission to collect that information) and applying other labels based on the content, provide and improve ad targeting and measurement, including through the use of your precise location information (again, if you’ve given us permission to collect that information), both on and off our services, enhance the safety and security of our products and services, verify your identity and prevent fraud or other unauthorized or illegal activity, use information we’ve collected from cookies and other technology to enhance our services and your experience with them." In short, Snapchat claims its to personalize one's experience and better the app, and even make the user safe.
4. Who else is given access to that data? How are they using it?
Bitstrips Inc., Zenly SAS, Placed Inc.
Bitstrips --> to link Bitmoki information to Snapchat. It's not a lot more specific than that. I'm assuming that Bitstrips also has access to the information detailed above the Snapchat has.
Zenly SAS --> Location services. Snap maps and advertisements.
Placed Inc --> Location service and consumer patterns, also used for advertising. For a "complete understanding" of what consumer's do.
5. Can you get access to your own data? Can you modify what is collected or used, or delete your data if you wish? No, but I have the option to deny access to the data... which will reduce the app's functionality.
On a scale of 1-4, where 1 is very uncomfortable with the company's data policy and 4 is very comfortable, I would rate Snapchat as a 2.
